Purpose

Lo Nuestro aims to uplift underrepresented Latine voices by telling stories that are our own. One narrative does not define the entire community. We are nuanced–more than contemporary media portrays us to be. We hold the power to tell our own raw narratives.

Check out local art, profiles, features, photo stories, poetry, art, essays and anything else from Latinos at UNC Chapel Hill! Since this is our first year, we are open to suggestions and all submissions.

Why Latine?

We decided to use Latine–not because we dislike the other terms for our community–but because we want to be inclusive. We are inclusive to those who are gender-fluid and non-binary and to Spanish speakers.

Latine is a gender-fluid term that refers to people with Latin American heritage. It is easier to pronounce in Spanish. Latinx, which is often used, is not since the x in Spanish does not make a sound.
